Several weeks ago, I found myself trapped in what may have been the slowest line in existence. That’s when I noticed a young mother just ahead with two little ones in tow—her eldest couldn’t have been more than three.Though my own children have long since outgrown the phase of hurling themselves to the floor like discarded banana peels, I remain well-versed in the warning signs. The restless shift in energy. The pinched lips and watery wide eyes The unmistakable sense that things are about to go terribly, loudly wrong. 😝As a mom who has contended with many a banana peel child, I distracted the little one with nonsense questions. Before long, the crisis was averted and a conversation struck up between myself and the would-be banana peel’s mom. Completely new to the area, she said she’d been plesantly surprised by how kind everyone in Lynchburg was—not the polite, passing sort of kindness, but something steadier. A sense of community that she’d always hope to find. Having grown up in Lynchburg, I sometimes take that kindness for granted—forget how genuinely rare it is. The way people here can be relied upon to offer a helping hand when they don’t have to. When no one’s watching, or keeping tally marks on a social media chalkboard.The sucsess of our Ties and Tails Gala relies heavilly on its silent auction, and that means building a collection of items as varied and generous as the people who support us. Every year, as our volunteers scramble from door to door, asking local businesses to contribute, I’m reminded of that sense of community. The way a simple ask turns into a conversation, then into a story…usually about a rescue pet who mattered to them. And in those moments, I feel it again—that thread of connection, warm and unmistakable, from one person to another.With the gala just around the corner, I wanted to pause and take a moment to thank those businesses. You are the heart of this community, and your generosity doesn’t go unnoticed. It makes a real, tangible difference here at CVRR—in the care we’re able to provide, in the animals we’re able to save, and in the futures we’re able to change.
