The two most common reason we have for trials or adoptions falling through are people who did not anticipate the needs of a youngster, and families who recently lost an animal and did not realize that their heart was still too deep in mourning to fall in love with another. Instead of healing what is broken, it simply reminds them of all they lost. It’s so common in fact that it’s a conversation that I try to have with any adopter who recently lost a beloved pet. We understand. We’ve all been there. One of our foster homes actually came to be involved when they applied to adopt through our previous organization. They seemed like the perfect match, but with time, it became apparent that it was too soon and so they began fostering for us instead.
When we ask you to pause and think for a beat we aren’t JUST protecting our animal, we are looking out for you as well. Adoption should be joyous…not bitter sweet. We want you to be swept away with the magic of it all, not held back with feelings of loss or comparison. And you may very well BE ready…in which case we are glad you chose us. So when we ask questions or gently probe, know that is with the experience of thousands of adoptions behind us. We offer the benefit of our experience….don’t cast it away.
These lovely ladies are Rizzo and August who we are doing our VERY best to adopt our together as a pair because they have been bonded their 7 years together. Help us keep this family together by sharing their sweet faces.
