Why in the world would we bring amazing dogs into our home, train them, fall in love with them, and make them part of our family…just to adopt them to another family? Because it’s beautiful. Because it’s saving a life. Because it teaches us to get over yourselves. Because we know that serving is more life giving than anything else. This next reason surprises me every time, you see, these dogs teach us. They, in some beautiful God given ability, teach us amazing disciplines, crazy ways to deal with others, and show us things about ourselves; becoming self aware. Our current foster has this ability to trust everyone. EVERYONE. To a fault. But it’s beautiful. She’s not had a good beginning in life, but she does not allow that to keep her from trusting people. I’ve told her over and over again that not everyone is to be trusted. Not everyone wants good for her. But that does not phase her. I have realized, through her, how guarded I am. How yes, there are those I need to keep my distance from, but then there are those, those amazing people, that I’m missing out on because I’m fearful, untrusting, and judgmental. I think if my current foster could speak she would tell me, with the sweetest most confident voice ever “Wendolyn, it’s worth it. You may trust the wrong people at times, but then you trust the right ones…and they will change your life.”
I think my husband would agree, as much as I want to say we foster because it changes their lives, we foster because they change our lives.
